Trees Still Standing Tall – July 2011
If we see the trees on the heritage Lalit Mahal Road still standing tall, Mysoreans should be grateful to the city’s activists and NGOs like MGP and also to the bold stand taken by Shashwathi Mishra, the then Deputy Conservator of Forest. There was tremendous pressure on her by political leaders to allow axing of over 200 trees to widen the road. Those supporting the axing of trees often point out that by widening road, traffic fatalities and accidents will come down. While every such death is a great loss not only to their near and dear ones, real reason is often related to violation of traffic rules and not the width of the roads.
When the government initiated a project in 2018 to widen 450 meters length heritage road from Kalamandira to Valmiki Road junction on the Mysuru-Hunsuru National Highway, it would have resulted in the felling of 30 huge 100 year old avenue trees on the road side and 70 trees inside the Jaladarshini Guest House and Deputy Commissioner’s residence compounds. MGP filed a PIL and succeeded in saving those trees. Here also the justification given was to prevent fatalities which was not supported by road experts. Over- speeding was the main reason for these accidents and no amount of widening can prevent them.
Mysore: A citizens’ group has called for a “public mourning” for 32 felled trees along the Lalitha Mahal Road here on Saturday. It will be held at the Arch Gate at 11 a.m. on January 20.
A mob went berserk following the death of a Group ‘D’ employee of the Mysore City Corporation (MCC) in a hit-and-run accident in the early hours of Saturday.
The issue was used to mobilise public support for the road-widening work on the Lalitha Mahal Road that entails felling nearly 200 trees but has been disallowed by the Tree Court.
Expressing grief over the death of Swamy who was killed in the accident, Bhamy V. Shenoy of the Mysore Grahakara Parishat (MGP) said mindless axing of tree was unwarranted.
“Such a mourning will send a powerful message to the people with vested interests that they cannot take law into their own hands and hopefully goonda raj may get a jolt”, according to Mr. Shenoy.
“This will be a solemn function. We will meet on January 20 at 11 a.m. near the Arch Gate on Lalitha Mahal Road. There will be no slogan shouting, no criticism of any one or any group but just a silent mourning for those 32 trees besides condoling the death of Swamy in an accident”, said Bhamy Shenoy.

Greater Awareness about Food Adulteration – 3000+ programmes MGP’s CV Nagaraj

Mysuru: As part of the ongoing Chinnara Mela summer camp, Mysore Grahakara Parishat (MGP) had organised a programme at Vanaranga in Kalamandira premises here yesterday which featured a demonstration on detection of adulteration in food items.
MGP Convenors C.V. Nagaraj and V. Mahesh demonstrated the techniques to identify adulterants in common food items. They pointed out that food items like oil, butter, ghee, pulses, khova, pepper and saffron were often adulterated with look-alike materials with no nutritional value and detrimental to health. They conducted demonstration to identify an adulterated item.
Many of the camp participants too involved in the demonstration posing inquisitive and intriguing questions to the organisers.
Nagaraj and Mahesh asked children not to be lured by cheap lollipops and sweets which were made with adulterated raw materials and carcinogenic colours not approved for food items.
The children seemed to relish the educative interlude amidst the routine cultural programmes.
