It is a well known fact that City’s five prominent lakes – Kukkarahalli, Lingambhudi, Thipparayan, Karanji and Hebbal are today polluted with the flow of storm water mixed with sewage.
In most wards of Mysuru City sewage system was handled to take care of single dwelling houses. Today in every street, multi-level apartment buildings have been constructed and old sewage system is unable to handle increasing amount of sewage. Overflowing sewage gets into storm water drains which flows into
these lakes. In some areas building owners connect sewage directly to storm water drains.
Hebbal is a perfect example of this tragic development. Two storm water drain inlets clearly show the copious flow of sewage into the lake converting it into a sewage pond. Despite an ultra modern STP operating efficiently and handling sewage flow from surrounding houses which are connected to the city’s sewage system, storm water drains have been polluting the lake.
Each lake has its own problems. For Thipparayan, real estate developer did not construct the right size STP and even the one which is there does not function.
To discuss the polluting problems of the lakes, MGP has invited Environmental officer at KSPCB, Shruthi, Executive Engineers at VVWW, Shrinivasamurthy and Mohan Kumar. It is expected that as a result of the meeting need for a master plan to revamp the city’s sewage system will be put on the city’s agenda. Today city’s annual budget provide just band aid type of funding of 50 crores to solve sewage problems when the needed amount is more than Rs. 1500 crores.
Meeting Venue is 6/1 Vivekananda Road, Yadavagiri, Mysuru.
